AROUND THE CVC

Alvernia University had their Tuesday night match this week against Juniata College postponed due to the inclement weather in the Northeast. The Crusaders are scheduled for a pair of matches this weekend as they face Wilkes and Staten Island on Saturday. Alvernia is currently 9-9 overall this season.
Cairn is on their 2017 spring break and will not return to action until March 21 when they return to CVC play against Alvernia. In fact the Highlanders will face both Alvernia and Stevenson next week when they come back from break. Cairn is being led by a trio of freshmen this season; Ralph Lunati, Collin Welteroth, and Spencer Matthews, who are the top three players in total kills for the team.
The Royals split a pair of matches last weekend, falling to King but rebounding with a 3-0 sweep of Alderson Broaddus. The Royals are now 15-6 overall, dropping to two spots in the latest AVCA poll to #9. The Royals balanced attack features Josh Elmore (2.92 kills per set) and Tim Callahan (2.62 kills per set) leading the way. Christian Taylor leads the CVC at 10.19 assists per set this season.
After more than a week away from the court Juniata had their return match postponed last night meaning their first game won't be until this Friday against Marymount, exactly two weeks after their last outing. Juniata will also face Eastern Mennonite and York this Saturday and are currently ranked #15 with an 11-7 overall record.
Marymount dropped all three matches last weekend, all coming against ranked teams. TJ Wiecheki was impressive in the losses, totaling 72 kills including a career high 30 kills against Lasell. It snapped a six match winning streak for the Saints, who are now 12-6 overall. This weekend they are back at it when they are scheduled to face Juniata on Friday and Thiel on Saturday.
The Scarlet Raiders bring a three match winning streak into this week's action and first up is #8 ranked NYU on Thursday night. Rutgers-Newark also has two more matches on Saturday as they host CVC members Alvernia and Stevenson. Rutgers-Newark is currently 9-12 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
Stevenson continues their break away from the court this week and will not return to action until the March 24-25 weekend. The Mustangs are set to face Cairn on Friday and Alvernia and Rutgers-Newark on that Saturday. Stevenson is currently 13-8 overall and 4-2 in the CVC.
Thiel will be on the road for three matches this weekend as they look to snap a two match losing streak. The Tomcats face Eastern Mennonite and York on Friday evening before taking on Marymount on Saturday. Thiel will then host two matches as they return home next week, facing Juniata on Tuesday and Penn State-Altoona the following Tuesday.
