Marymount and Southern Virginia Join Rutgers-Newark in Championship Field

After Saturday's win in the 2022 Continental Volleyball Conference Tournament Championship match, Rutgers University-Newark had secured the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship. But on Monday morning Marymount University and Southern Virginia University found out they would be joining the Scarlet Raiders in the championship field. 

Rutgers-Newark won the CVC Tournament 3-1 over Southern Virginia on Saturday. It marked the second time in program history they have won the conference tournament and the first since 2015. Rutgers-Newark is ranked #5 in the nation and this will be the program's third time in program history appearing in the national championship. The Scarlet Raiders were selected to host the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament and will take on Baruch College in the First Round. Other schools playing in Rutgers this weekend will be Baruch College, Wentworth, and St. John Fisher. The first-round matches will take place on Friday with a spot in the semifinal on the line Saturday evening. Rutgers-Newark, who previously made the tournament in 2015 and 2016, will open play on Friday, April 15 at 4:00 pm against the winners of the CUNY, Baruch College. Upon the completion of that match, Wentworth will take on St. John Fisher for the second match of the day for their right to the NCAA Quarterfinal. 

Meanwhile, Marymount, who is 23-8 overall this season and ranked #14 in the country, will be making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance; earning one of five at-large spots. The Saints fell in the semifinals of the CVC Tournament to Rutgers-Newark. Marymount will face SUNY New Paltz (20-6) on Friday, April 15 at 6:30 PM. If the Saints win their first-round game, they will advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday, April 16 at 6:00 PM where they'll face the winner of host Springfield (26-1) and Penn State-Behrend (22-7). 

Southern Virginia University also earned a Pool C at-large selection to this year's championship field. The Knights are 18-4 overall this season, ranked #7 in the nation, after falling to Rutgers-Newark in the CVC championship match. The Knights will be making their third consecutive appearance in the national championship. They will face St. Joseph's (L.I.) at Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
